By Kamwine Okelong – It’s been rated as the route that holds the key to unlocking Africa’s great future. Whoever succeeds in completing this road, will be the hero of Africa. But what is it about this route? This route holds Africa’s most diversity. It also holds Africa’s beginnings and endings. But it is also one of the most volatile routes. It’s the most commercial route, most efficient, most optimum way of getting from ocean to ocean that surround Africa.

“We must figure out how to open this route. It’s one of the most important conversations in Africa,” says a key Africa Geopolitics player and investor. It is also probably the route that controls Africa’s biodiversity, languages. It is also the largest distance one car go in Africa while speaking one language and not fail to find speakers of that language. Swahili is that language. Yet there are those who argue that Kinyarwanda could be that other language? Luganda also plays a potential contender to this route.

Also great about this route is that it now bears what we call; “The East African Community-EAC”. But what is the distance of this route? Which cities make up this route? Who are the players to this route?
This route is 3,968.8 kilometres, let’s round that to 4000 Kilometres. It would take you 21 hours and 40 minutes to fly from Mombasa to Kinshasa. To cover the same distance by road would be another story. It is also likely a near impossibility.

Africa’s future is in this road. This road must unlock industrialization in Africa. It’s also a region rich in minerals. Minerals run industries, from phones to the next age of artificial intelligence. Africa must thus invest in education and innovation on this route. Education and innovation could hold the key to this route. Yet, there’s no guarantee that the highly educated on this route wouldn’t desire to escape from this route. Thus, the route must also figure out how to retain the best of its talent.

In the coming days, Africa Nxt Gen will explore the challenges and hurdles on this route. We shall delve deeper into the intricacies of this Silk Road of Africa. Will it be the Silk road or Silk roads? Could it be the road that holds the secret to peace and stability in Africa? Yet, Africa can also choose to find a worthy ideal upon which to fashion this road. Man, they say can will his fate. Africa must will its fate.
