Africa is rising, African organizations are rising, yet organizations in Africa, from Uganda to Tanzania to South Africa to Malawi to Chad to Ghana, must deal with one puzzle; “how to compete?” And when organizations think of competitive strategy, there’s the urge in knowing what the other party is doing and finding a way to do better. The organizations of the future must figure out a new strategic line – the line of organizational culture.

It’s now easy to find out about your competitor. Everything can be copied. You can copy their suppliers and bring in the same equipment. Given that organizations play in the same market, one can tell an organization’s strategy based on how they show up in the market. Today, several organizations have dialed up their sustainable frontlines, the environmental, social and governance aspects are top of the dashboards.

But one key aspect is often ignored, the cultural front line. Organizations of the future must figure out how to unlock cultures. More than ever before, the human resources, the people factor is going to form the major competitive advantage for organizations. It’s impossible to copy culture, to copy teams, to copy groups and their dynamics. People are the DNA of an organization. You can predict the future of an organization based on this DNA. Organizations must figure out a consistent team dynamic, how to form teams and how to create performing teams. That implies organizations must evolve to work through the stages of team formation faster than ever before.

We see the future of organizations playing out at this cultural front. Leaders in African organization must spend more time on culture transformations. These culture transformations are the hard beat of organizational transformation. First, you must transform the culture before anything. Culture is hard work, and many leaders know it, thus avoid it. Yet, it’s through culture that sustainable success can be built and nurtured.
