Africa Must Represent Itself At The Top

One of the things you soon notice about Africa and Africans is the under-representation in the fields that matter. One of the main fields in this world is the field of finance. Yet, you will count the number of Ugandans, Kenyans, and Zambians in such fields. And precisely, the ones who go into the sections that matter in this field.

Think of hedge funds, think of investment banking, think of private equity. Every month, Uganda must be producing at least 20 people into these fields if it is to make a major breakthrough. There’s a chance we don’t even get two Ugandans entering those fields every year. Africans must be at the centre where it counts. When international organizations or other funders give Ugandans scholarships, they must seek scholarships in such fields.

Not to downgrade existing scholarships such as human rights, journalism and many others that fall in that category. It’s simply to state that Africa needs more of the crucial scholarships. Teach Africans how to raise capital, how to structure capital, how to manage assets, how to manage wealth. Get them in investment banking, as many of them as possible. Those are the things that shift the needle.

At Africa Nxt Gen Foundation, we believe in the high impact fields. Finance is high impact for Africa and we must start to represent ourselves in those areas. The main problem of Africa is Finance, yet Africa doesn’t have its voices in these fields. We keep going for fields that may not be what Africa needs right now. We must accelerate building the next Vanguard, the next Blackrock. It must start now. Africans must flood finance.
