The New Capitals That Africa Must Pursue for Transformation

Spread the love

Will Africa transform? Yes, Africa has shown growth in different economies but that hasn’t necessarily resulted into transformation. The structure of Africa has not been significantly altered. Several African countries have registered improvements in health and education outcomes, yet the overall fundamentals of Africa have continued to lag global standards.

As Africa rethinks its place in the next century, new questions must be fronted. One of those questions is about the new capital. Could Africa refocus on the new capitals and catch up with the rest of the world?

Those new capitals are the human and data capital.

And here’s why?

On the Human Capital, Africa boasts of the highest youth populations in the world. By 2050, Africa’s youth population will hit the 2.5 billion mark making Africa the source of the next human capital in the world. Yet, the productivity of that human capital is not fully unlocked. The focus of the African governments should be in unlocking the productivity of this human capital. How do you make the African youth population competitive for the global stage? How shall they be skilled in the right categories? How can the creativity of this population be stirred and channelled for the transformation of Africa? It’s the conversation that must feature on every table that’s discussing the future of Africa.

On the Data Capital, Africa is one of the least documented parts of the world. There’s a lot that’s yet to be known about Africa. The numbers are yet to be captured. What would it mean if Africa unlocked its data universe? What stories would be told by the numbers? What would that mean for the policy makers, for the investors? This abundance of the data world that’s yet to be fully unveiled is an opportunity for Africa. How do African governments build solid data worlds? How do they link this to the Artificial Intelligence movement?

Africa must focus on these two capitals to earn a place on the global frontiers. It’s the human and data capitals. It’s on this hill that Africa must die.
